Changes to Set Works in 2020 Theory of Music and Musicianship Syllabuses

 

In 2020 several changes are being introduced to the Set Works component for Grades 5 and 6 in both Theory of Music and Musicianship syllabuses. These changes are outlined in their entirety below.

 

When are the changes taking place?

 

2020 format exams will be available for purchase on the 1st of November 2019. Candidates who purchase a 2020 format exam will not be able to sit their official exam until the 1st of January 2020. Practice exams will be made available from the time of purchase.

 

2019 format exams will remain on sale until 31st December 2019. Any candidate who purchases a 2019 format exam will have 12 months from the date of purchase to complete that exam.

 

Please note that:

 

  • Any candidate who purchases a 2019 format exam will not be automatically switched to the 2020 syllabus format.
  • Extensions for 2019 format exams will not be permitted past 31st December 2020.

  

What resources is the AMEB providing to help candidates prepare for the new exams?

 

Candidates who purchase the 2020 format exams will have access to:

 

  • Practice exams
  • A PDF sample paper

 

AMEB will also be making analyses of all Set Works available for purchase.

 

What are the changes?
 

Grade 5 Theory of Music

 

Grade 5 Theory of Music did not previously have a Set Works component. This is being introduced for the first time in the 2020 Syllabus.

 

The two set works for Grade 5 Theory of Music in 2020 are:

 

MOZART, Divertimento in E flat major K 563, Minuet and Trio, third movement

HANDEL, Comfort ye my people AND Ev’ry valley shall be exalted from Messiah HWV 56 Part 1

 

Candidates will be required to answer questions on both of the works. Analyses of both of these works will also be made available by the AMEB.

 

Questions on the above set works will replace some of the General Knowledge questions concerning: Minuet and Trio; Scherzo; Air with variations; Recitative; and Aria, in the works of Handel or Mozart.

 

Grade 6 Theory of Music

 

The set works for Grade 6 Theory of Music in 2020 are:

 

MOZART, Piano concerto No 23 in A major K 488, second movement

BEETHOVEN, Symphony No 5 in C minor Op. 67, first movement

HANDEL, Overture from Alcina HWV 34

 

Candidates will be required to answer questions on each of the works. Analyses will be made available by the AMEB.

 

In 2020 format exams, candidates will no longer be asked questions on:

 

BEETHOVEN, Symphony No 3 in E flat major Op. 55, first and second movements.

 

Grade 5 Musicianship

 

The set works for Grade 5 Musicianship in 2020 are:

 

FINZI, O mistress mine from Let us garlands bring Op. 18 No 4

MOZART, String quartet No 14 in G Major K 387, first movement

SCHUBERT, Frühlingstraum from Winterreise D 911 [any edition in F major]

 

Candidates will be required to answer questions on each of the works. Analyses will also be made available by the AMEB.

 

In 2020 format exams, candidates will no longer be asked questions on:

 

SCHUBERT, Erlkönig D 328

VAUGHAN WILLIAMS, The Vagabond

MOZART, String quintet K 614, first movement

 

Grade 6 Musicianship

 

The set works for Grade 6 Musicianship in 2020 are:

 

CHOPIN, Nocturnes Op. 15 [complete work]

SCHUMANN, Piano quintet in E flat major Op. 44, first movement

 

Candidates will be required to answer questions on each of the works. Analyses will also be made available by the AMEB.

 

In 2020 format exams, candidates will no longer be asked questions on:

 

DEBUSSY, Préludes 1-6 from Préludes Book 1

BRAHMS, Piano quartet in C minor Op. 60, first movement
